What is Competency Demonstration Report (CDR)?
A Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is a collection of documents through which engineers can prove their competencies in order to get a Skilled Migration visa for Australia. It is required by Engineers Australia to assess the competency of an engineer with overseas qualifications not covered by the Washington Accord.
Engineers who are preparing for migration to Australia needs to be assessed by Engineers Australia through Competency Demonstration Report. So, it is very important to make the CDR Report perfect to get approved by Engineers Australia. The main purpose of CDR Assessment is to know:
Your knowledge of technical factors of engineering
How you have used your engineering knowledge and skills
Your competency capability in the engineering occupation you choose.
The reason for the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) is to illustrate:
how you have connected your engineering learning and abilities
that such application meets the competency models of the pertinent industrial class in Australia.
Complete assistance in the preparation of your CDR Report consists of mainly Three Different Components and should be written within the given < a href=”/length-of-cdr-report-skill-assessment/”>length of the CDR report as per EA.
Continual Professional Development (CPD): This is fundamentally a rundown of what you have done to keep yourself refreshed about your field in the wake of finishing your engineering graduation.
Three Career Episodes (CE): which are three articles that you write to demonstrate your development as an engineer. The articles are 1000-2500 words as the prescribed length, must be composed in the primary individual and may discuss a particular period or distinctive part of your engineering background. All three CE articles must be drawn from various times of engineering work or feature distinctive parts of your experience as an engineer. Keep in mind to utilize Australian English while composing CDR Report.
Summary Statement (SS):On the last page of your CDR, you say how the Career Episodes you have composed identify with the capabilities EA is searching for – and precisely which passage of which Career Episode identify with various competency components in the coveted profile.
Step by Step Guidelines for CDR Writing by Engineers Australia
The worst risk associated with attempting to write your own CDR is that lack of information or a poorly-written report may mar your chances of getting you an Australian Skilled Migration visa. So, follow all the guidelines for CDR issued by Engineers Australia carefully:
Your CV is a full summary of your engineering education and work experience. It should be a chronological listing of your employment and not projects you have worked on. It should be presented in A4 size pages and should not be longer than three pages in any case. For each workplace, mention:
Name and location of the organisation along with its contact details,
Dates and duration of employment,
Your job title,
Your job responsibilities as defined in the appointment letter and a brief description of what you did there.
Your CPD should be mentioned in the list format. It should not be more than one page long (in A4 size).
Career Episodes must be written in English. The recommended length of each narrative should be 1,000 to 2,500 words. It should not be too technical. A career episode must be written in the first person and highlight what you did as an individual in the particular case you set out to narrate.
Number each paragraph of your career episode in the following manner:
Career episode 1 (paragraphs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc.)
Career episode 2 (paragraphs 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc.)
Career episode 3 (paragraphs 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 etc.)
The paragraph numbers will be used for cross-referencing in the Summary statement.
A Career Episode should look like an essay and not a table.
There is only one Summary Statement that covers all the three career episodes.

Features of a Good CDR
Characteristics of a good CDR are:
Remember, the Career Episodes aim to showcase your skills as a Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Associate, or Engineering Manager. Hence, choose them carefully to demonstrate the competency elements for the engineering category in which you are applying. Refer our Ultimate Guide to write a Career Episode.
Use correct Australian English. A CDR report is also supposed to show your communication skills to the EA assessor.
One of the key features of an effective CDR is that it keeps off any extraneous details that Engineers Australia doesn’t ask for. For example, EA doesn’t want to know the history of your company, the achievements of your team, or the market size or share of your past employer. It only concerns itself with your role in the company and your personal contribution to your organisation as an engineer.
Be ready to substantiate all your claims with documents and evidence. Show proof of results you claim to achieve.
EA prescribes prescriptive writing style for Career Episodes. These episodes should be written in the first person – in an active voice. It means that you should use words as I researched, I planned, I measured etc.
Engineers Australia asks you to write a Summary Statement where you have to analyse how each paragraph you wrote in your ‘Career Episodes’ relate to the competency elements for the Skilled Migration category you are applying for. It means that you have to remain relevant at all times or you will lose ‘analysis’ points.
We suggest that some of the ways in which you can show that how capable you are as an engineer is to talk about technical challenges or problems you faced during a project, gauge the gravity in terms of losses your company would have incurred, steps you took as an engineer to solve the problem, and rewards and recognition you received for your efforts.
