Does VETASSESS deduct experience? Understanding the Date Deemed Skilled
In effect, yes. The qualifying period of highly relevant work needed to pass is not counted again for points test advice. Your history is not erased; only work after your Date Deemed Skilled earns points advice.
These months show you meet the assessment criteria, which typically means at least one year of highly relevant work at the required skill level within the five years before you lodge. They are not counted again as skilled employment for points.
The day after the qualifying period is met. VETASSESS works this date out for you and uses it as the starting line for your points test advice.
Only employment from this date counts as skilled employment in the advice. The five-year window is just an example, and the Department of Home Affairs makes the final decision on points.

You generally need a minimum of one year of highly relevant employment at the required skill level within the five years before you lodge.
Longer in some cases
If a qualification is not highly relevant, more years of highly relevant work may be needed. Check your occupation information sheet.

Your occupation decides which route applies. The wrong pathway is a common and avoidable delay.
A professional VETASSESS skills assessment reviews your qualification against the Australian Qualifications Framework and your employment for relevance and skill level. Occupations sit in groups by ANZSCO skill level.
Skill level 1
Australian bachelor, master or doctoral degree level.
Skill level 2
AQF associate degree, advanced diploma or diploma level.
Skill level 3
AQF Certificate III (with extra years of employment) or Certificate IV.
You must meet one pathway fully on its own. Criteria from different pathways cannot be combined, and highly relevant work cannot replace a missing qualification at the required level.

For trades assessed by Trades Recognition Australia, fees and refunds are handled directly by TRA, so read its guidelines first.

Does VETASSESS expire?
Yes. A skills assessment is currently valid for three years from its issue date for migration. Renew within those three years at a lower fee; renewals typically take 2 to 5 weeks. Confirm visa-specific rules with the Department of Home Affairs.
If the outcome is not suitable
Your letter explains which components fell short. You can request a review within 90 days or a reassessment within 12 months, and an appeal is also available. Talk to the assessor first.

Use the VETASSESS login on the VETASSESS website to upload evidence, track your application, download your signed declaration page and access your outcome letter.
