What is ACWA Skill Assessment?
Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) is an Australian assessing authority responsible for assessing community work and social welfare qualifications for migration purposes. An ACWA skill assessment verifies whether your qualifications and, where applicable, employment experience meet Australian standards for community work and related occupations.

Three criteria
CWA checks your qualification, your English language proficiency, and your employment and industry currency.

You nominate a single occupation, and each extra occupation needs its own application and full fee.

Social Workers go elsewhere
Social Worker is not on CWA's list of assessed occupations. Social Workers apply to the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

ACWA work experience and industry currency requirements by occupation
Experience must be paid direct service work, completed after your qualification and within the last four years. Full-time means 30 hours or more per week.
- With a CWA accredited or recognised qualification, field placements are treated as meeting the experience requirement.
- With a relevant diploma or higher, you need at least one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) industry experience within the last four years.
- Roles that only need an AQF level 3 or 4 certificate do not count.
- Employment must be paid, direct service to people with disability, post-qualification and at AQF level 5 skill level.
- A relevant specialised diploma or higher needs at least 12 months full-time (or equivalent).
- A CWA accredited specialised diploma or higher is deemed to meet the requirement through field placement.
- A non-specialised relevant community services qualification needs at least two years full-time (or equivalent).
- Accredited or recognised youth work qualifications are deemed to meet the experience requirement through practicum.
- A specialised youth work diploma needs at least one year of full-time youth services employment at the required skill level.
- A non-specialised qualification at AQF level 5 or higher needs two years.
Industry currency: meet any one of these
Qualification under 4 years old
Your qualification was completed less than four years ago.
3 months of current work
At least three months of full-time (or equivalent) relevant employment in a current role at the required skill level.
6 months in 18 months
At least six months of relevant employment at the required skill level within the last 18 months.

No paid fast-track
CWA offers no paid priority service. After your application is formally submitted, you can email a priority request with documentary evidence. Requests are assessed case by case and are not guaranteed.
What causes delays
Missing documents, trouble verifying documents, difficulty contacting referees or employers, incomplete applications and outdated contact details.

Nominate one occupation
Read the ANZSCO description and confirm you meet the criteria. Only one occupation is allowed per application.
Prepare your documents
Collect everything on CWA's document checklist before you start.
Create a portal account
Apply online, track your status and download your outcome letter from the skills assessment portal.
Submit in one session
Choose your migration program (general skilled, WA DAMA or ACILA) and upload your evidence. Drafts may lose attached files if you exit.
Wait for your outcome
An assessment officer reviews your file. Your status moves from Submitted to In Progress and finally Suitable or Not Suitable.

ACWA skills assessment myths: six things applicants often get wrong
Employment can prove my English.
Not any more. From 7 August 2025, CWA no longer accepts employment as English language evidence.
The assessment is valid for 24 months.
It is three years. CWA outcomes are valid for three years from the issue date shown on the outcome letter.
The assessment costs about AUD 550.
The general fee is AUD 965. DAMA is also AUD 965, and the aged care pathway is AUD 595, all including GST.
Social Workers apply to CWA.
They do not. Social Worker is not on CWA's list of assessed occupations, and Social Workers apply to AASW.
A certificate-level job counts as experience.
No. Roles needing only an AQF level 3 or 4 certificate do not count toward the experience requirement.
