The change in Australian visa 2022: Opportunities for migrants

Australian visa

Here’s a rundown of some of the significant immigration policies that have been proposed as Australia aims to rise up the migration process as part of its economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to broad travel prohibitions and border closures, migration to Australia has tumbled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they reopened the border in 2022.

Earlier this month the Treasury’s mid-year economic statement released net overseas migration, which is predicted to rise to 180,000 people in 2022-23, up from minus 41,000 people in 2021-22. (almost double the previous estimate).

Which visa holders are permitted to visit Australia at the moment?

On December 15, 2021, Australia’s borders reopened to qualifying international students and holders of certain skilled visas, nearly six months sooner than the federal budget had predicted.

Citizens and permanent residents of Australia, as well as their immediate family members, are welcome to visit.

More opportunities for temporary visa holders

While many temporary visa holders fled Australia during the epidemic situation owing to a lack of work and welfare support, it is predicted that the focus will now shift to granting permanent residency pathways to those who have stayed, while some of those pathways are already announced.

For 2021-22 the planned level was kept at 160,000 places, with the same composition as the previous year, resulting in 79,600 places for the Skill stream, 77,300 places for Family, 100 places for Special Eligibility, and 3,000 places for minors.

The Department of Home Affairs spokeswoman stated that, throughout the epidemic situation, the government has implemented a number of visa modifications and will continue to examine visa settings to support Australia’s economic recovery.

Permanent residency for skilled migrants in the regions

Temporary migrants who were stuck offshore due to the pandemic have been the hardest hit, according to Ruby Fowdar, managing director of the Australian Immigration Agency. In Australia, however, visa holders are in an “excellent situation.”

She highlighted that the skilled regional subclass 191 visa, for persons who have lived, worked, or studied in a specified regional area on a previous, qualified visa, is one of the new permanent residency pathways.

She also explained, “It’s a three-year pathway; you have to be on a 494 visa for three years before applying for the 191”.
According to the division, the visa will not commence until November 16, 2022.

For skilled migration visas, the ‘Section 48 bar’ has been lifted

Skilled migrants in Australia will be able to apply onshore for three skilled migration visa categories for a limited time as per a revision to section 48 of the Migration Act.
The applicants who have had a visa refused or canceled since their last arrival in Australia are subject to the Section 48 ban.
The visa subclasses 491, 494, and 190 are provisionally included in the list of exempted visas on November 13.

The adjustment, according to a department official, only applies during the current COVID-19 situation.

As the official has advised, after the term expires, the extra subclasses will be withdrawn from the list of exempt visas.

New visa settings for temporary graduate visa holders

The temporary graduate visa holders who are stranded offshore and unable to travel to Australia owing to the epidemic can apply for a new visa, but there will be chances of delay.

According to the government of Australia, the current or former temporary graduate (subclass 485) visa holders whose visas expired on or after 1 February 2020 will be able to reapply for a new visa of the same period from 1 July 2022.

Also, the recently graduated international students with expertise in particular occupations who want to stay in Australia and work can get 485 visas.

Other temporary graduate visa parameters will alter, including an increase in the stay length on the 485 visas for Masters by Coursework graduates from two to three years, and the Graduate Work stream from 18 to 24 months.

“It’s a very humanitarian concession, and it means we have an opportunity to reclaim a lot of the talent that was here.”

“There are a plethora of different adjustments and eventualities, as well as who applies for what and who is eligible for what. However, if there is another border shutdown, this will almost certainly be the first thing to go.”

The adjustments mentioned above will be implemented gradually from December 2021 to July 2022, with more information expected on the department’s website. According to the government, from July 1, 2022, applicants can apply for a replacement visa.

Ms. Fowdar urged people to seek expert migration assistance, mentioning the fact that information is continuously changing and that additional changes are expected in the next year.

Engineering Pathway to get PR in Australia

We’ve explained the steps involved in applying for a permanent resident visa in Australia for engineers who want to move there.

  1. Acquire a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  2. Apply for skill assessments under the relevant pathway, depending on the qualification.
  3. Once Engineers Australia has given you a positive response, you can apply for a visa in Australia.

Skills Assessment – Engineers Australia

A skills assessment is required before you can apply for a permanent resident visa. Engineers Australia is the assessment authority for engineers (EA). Depending on your certification, EA has multiple skill assessment pathways.

We’ve summarized the many options for you below:

EA considers some courses in Australia and abroad to be approved. They previously assessed these courses as meeting the educational requirements for becoming an Australian professional engineer.

The majority of approved courses are taught in Australia, although some are taught in other countries, such as Malaysia or Singapore.

When applying for the skills assessment, select the Australian Qualification Pathway if you have completed an accredited course.

  • Washington Accord
  • Sydney Accord
  • Dublin Accord

Qualification is non-accredited/ non- Accord

If none of the options above apply, you must apply for a skill assessment using the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) method. Preparing a report, which must include the following information, is a requirement of the CDR process.

Continuing Professional Development
The CPD must demonstrate your current update with the development in your field of engineering after you completed your graduation.

3 Career Episodes
You need to submit three career episodes to Engineers Australia with distinct projects. It must contain or highlight your engineering education and/or professional experience. Each episode should focus on a different component of your engineering work or a different time period.

Summary Statement
There are competency units and aspects that must be met in order to be assessed as an engineer. You can use the summary statement to show how your experience meets these requirements.
